TransGambia Coorridor Project
he Government of the Republic of The Gambia has received a grant from the African Development Fund to finance the Trans-Gambia Corridor Project. The Client is the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, with the Implementing Agency being the National Roads Authority.
The Trans-Gambia Road Transport Corridor is an economic and strategic link connecting the northern and southern parts of both The Gambia and Senegal. The sector goal of the project is to support economic growth of the countries on the Trans-Gambian Corridor (Kaolack-Trans- Gambian Highway-Ziguinchor), considered part of the Trans-West African Highway (Dakar –Lagos Corridor) and ECOWAS at large by fostering integration through reliable, efficient and seamless transport infrastructure that will increase the competitiveness of the whole region. Interstate transit on the corridor is characterized by several barriers that include lack of a reliable connection at Yelitenda (Farafenni – Soma), currently serviced by a ferry across The Gambia River and poor road conditions.
The main elements of the Trans-Gambia Corridor Project consist of:
Design and Supervision of Trans-Gambia Bridge and Tolling Facilities
Design and Supervision of 2 No. Joint Border Posts
Consultancy for HIV/AIDS/STI awareness and prevention, Road Safety and Gender Issues awareness
Design and Supervision of Feeder Roads and Markets
Consulting Services for Feasibility and Detailed Studies and Bridge Institutional Model
The Trans-Gambian Corridor (Kaolack-Trans-Gambian Highway-Ziguinchor), which is part of the Cairo-Dakar-Lagos Corridor, serves as an important economic and strategic link connecting the northern and southern parts of both The Gambia and Senegal, and by extension ECOWAS countries through the corridor between Dakar and Lagos. A major barrier to transport along the corridor – to be addressed by the project – is the lack of a reliable connection at Yalitenda, currently serviced by a ferry across the Gambia River.

The Trans-Gambia bridge project has been under study since 1972.
The last studies were led for former client OMVG (Organisation pour la Mise en Valeur du Fleuve Gambie) by engineering companies BCEOM and SCET Tunisie during the 1990s.
An updating of the studies was led by BCEOM and SCET Tunisie between 2007 and 2009. The base design of our project is a result of this last update.
