Gambian leader, President Adama Barrow, on Saturday, 18th October 2025, laid the foundation stone for the construction of the 6km Garawol-Kusum road project in the Upper River Region (URR).

The road will connect several communities, including Baraji Kunda, Kebbeh Kunda, Kanjabina, Sami Kuta and other surrounding communities.

The design incorporates comprehensive structures, including side drains and erosion control features. The road project is part of the 30km already surveyed for construction.

The construction will be supervised by qualified engineers and consultants and executed by experienced contractors under strict quality control protocols.

The project reinforces the government’s commitment to enhancing road infrastructure and fostering sustainable development.

The acting Managing Director of the National Roads Authority, Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, stated that the laying of the foundation stone for the Garawol to Kusuum Road Project is not just a ceremonial act—it is a declaration of their shared commitment to progress, connectivity, and opportunity.

According to him, the Garawol–Kusuum road will be constructed to modern standards, featuring an all-weather bituminous surface dressing.

“This choice of surface ensures durability and resilience against seasonal weather conditions, particularly the heavy rains that often compromise unpaved roads.”

He revealed that the road will have a carriageway width of 10 meters, which includes adequate shoulders to enhance safety and accommodate both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

“The design also incorporates comprehensive hydraulic structures, including culverts, side drains, and erosion control features. These are essential for managing stormwater runoff, preventing flooding, and preserving the structural integrity of the road over time,” said the NRA boss.

MD Sumareh-Janneh noted that the project will include earthworks, sub-base and base layers, and proper compaction to ensure long-term stability, adding that the alignment has been carefully studied to minimise environmental impact while maximising accessibility for the surrounding communities.

Meanwhile, the National Roads Authority will ensure that all works adhere to national standards and best international practices.
