On Sunday, 27th July 2025, the Acting Managing Director of the National Roads Authority (NRA), Mr. Sulayman Sumareh Janneh served as the guest speaker at the 17th graduation ceremony of the Al-Imam Malick Islamic Institute, under the Sumbundou Kati Society.
The event, held at the institute’s grounds in Kanifing, brought together prominent figures from the country’s Islamic community.
In his keynote address, Mr. Sumareh-Janneh congratulated the graduates and emphasised the importance of education and national service. He encouraged the graduating students to take pride in their achievements while recognising the responsibility that comes with them.
“Graduating from one level to another is a significant milestone,” he stated. “But it also comes with a duty — you are now the torchbearers of change. The future of The Gambia depends on how you apply the knowledge and cultural values instilled in you here at Al-Imam Malick.”
He further reminded the graduates of their unique position, highlighting their multilingual capabilities and religious grounding as critical assets for leadership and nation-building. “You have an edge — you understand Arabic, English, and the teachings of the Quran. This positions you to contribute meaningfully to the development of our country.”
Reflecting on his own journey, Mr. Sumareh-Janneh, a U.S.-trained civil, structural, and geotechnical engineer, spoke about his decision to return home and serve. “I was leading major engineering projects in the United States. But when I was called upon to return and serve The Gambia, I accepted that call out of duty and patriotism.”
In recognition of his support for the institute and his broader charitable contributions, Mr. Sumareh-Janneh was presented with a certificate of appreciation by the school administration.
A total of 87 students graduated during the ceremony, comprising 60 males and 27 females.
