Widening of the Bertil Harding Highway – Phase III
Progress Update
Background
The successful completion of Phases I and II of the Bertil Harding Highway marked a major milestone in improving mobility within the Greater Banjul Area and across the country. The modern highway significantly enhanced traffic flow while underscoring The Gambia’s commitment to developing resilient infrastructure that supports economic growth.
Building on these achievements, Phase III of the project is designed to further strengthen road safety and mobility, optimise network performance, resolve persistent drainage challenges, and extend the lifespan of the highway. Upon completion, this phase will fully activate the corridor, unlocking new opportunities for commerce, investment, and socio-economic development.
The project will also substantially increase the infrastructure asset base and value of the National Roads Authority (NRA). Its outcomes are aligned with the objectives of the Recovery-Focused National Development Plan (RF-NDP) and are consistent with the goals of the National Transport Policy 2018–2027.
Project Objectives
The primary objective of Phase III is to improve the overall functionality of the Bertil Harding Highway through the construction of an additional overpass and the development of service roads equipped with essential drainage systems and road furniture. These interventions are aimed at enhancing mobility, safety, and accessibility to residential and commercial areas.
Specifically, the project seeks to:
Stimulate economic activity, improve mobility, resolve drainage challenge and enhance road safety amongst others
Work Progress
Both the contractor, AREZKI, and the temporary consultant, GAMWORKS, are fully mobilised and actively executing works on site.
Relocation of Services
Significant progress has been recorded in the relocation of utility services, including:
Completion of the relocation of GAMTEL and NAWEC water and electricity services along a 300-metre extension on both arms of the Brusubi Roundabout.
Completion of trial hole excavations from the Brusubi Roundabout towards Bijilo on both the left-hand and right-hand sides.
Successful relocation of GAMTEL and NAWEC services along the Independence Stadium Roads.
Preparations underway for the relocation of electricity services from the Brusubi Roundabout towards Senegambia (9.6km – 14km).
Civil Works Construction
Construction activities are progressing steadily, with notable achievements including:
Identification and marking of structures encroaching on the 30-metre Right-of-Way between the Brusubi Roundabout and Senegambia (9.6km – 14km) for valuation and subsequent demolition.
Stockpiling of laterite material at the Airport Junction (0km starting point) to accelerate construction activities.
Ongoing clearing, grubbing, and removal of topsoil along the Independence Stadium Roads.
Completion of drainage works along the Stadium, Sport Centre, and Bakary Camara Roads.
Completion of sub-grade, sub-base, and sand-stabilised base layers on the Independence Stadium and Sport Centre Roads.
Completion of priming, kerb lines, and double surface dressing on the Stadium and Sport Centre Roads, including parking areas.
Completion of base course layers between 12km and 13.5km (left-hand side) and 13.5km to 11.5km (right-hand side).
Ongoing earthworks from 11.5km towards 9.6km on the right-hand side.
Near completion of concrete-lined shallow drains.
Completion of 600-metre double seal coat diversions on both sides of the Sukuta/Jabang intersection.
Ongoing casting of concrete panels for the Sukuta/Jabang Overpass.
Sukuta/Jabang Overpass
Construction of the Sukuta/Jabang Overpass has reached key structural milestones:
Completion of pile drilling works and pile caps.
Completion of all piers and cross beams.
Successful pile integrity testing with no negative results recorded.
Ongoing installation of reinforcement, formwork, and concrete casting for precast panels and cornices.
Installation of cross-beam supports for piers P1 and P3 on the left-hand side is currently in progress.
Design and Approvals
On the design front, several critical approvals have been secured:
Approval of the Sukuta/Jabang Overpass detour plan.
Approval of detailed designs for the Independence Stadium Roads.
Approval of detailed designs covering 9.6km to 13.5km.
Approval of Bills of Quantities (BOQs) for the relocation of NAWEC electricity and water services.
Approval of the proposed centreline for service roads from the Brusubi Roundabout to Palma Rima (km 9.6km – 15.5km).
