President Adama Barrow, on Saturday 25th April 2026, officially opened the Kiang West Roads Project, celebrating the completion of a major infrastructure initiative at a vibrant ceremony in Jaffaron, Lower River Region. The event marks another step forward in the government’s push to strengthen rural development.

Stretching 87 kilometres and delivered in two phases, the project aims to enhance connectivity within Kiang West and nearby communities. Fully financed by the Government of The Gambia, the roads were constructed by Gai Construction, with Cityscape Associates acting as consultants.

At the inauguration, the Managing Director of the National Roads Authority, Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, described the roads as more than physical infrastructure. He emphasised their role in transforming lives by bringing farmers closer to markets, improving access to healthcare and education, and opening up opportunities for isolated communities.

He further noted that the project sends a strong message that every region and community matters in the country’s development agenda, and that no citizen is left behind.

The first phase of the project covered the 39-kilometre Sankandi–Karantaba trunk road, a vital transport route in the area. The second phase added 48 kilometres of community roads. Initially planned for four roads, the scope was expanded to ten sections, benefiting over 20 villages.

Overall, the Kiang West Roads Project is expected to improve mobility, enhance safety, and stimulate economic and social growth across the Lower River Region, reinforcing the government’s commitment to expanding rural infrastructure.
