Barrow Launches Over 13km GIRAV Roads Project in URR
As part of ongoing nationwide foundation stone-laying ceremonies for the GIRAV Roads Project, Adama Barrow has officially launched a 13.6-kilometre feeder roads project in the Upper River Region (URR).
The project consists of two road sections with a combined length of 13.6km and is funded by the World Bank.
The two road sites—Sare Fodike to Sare Jammu Mballow (8.2km) in Sandu, and Chamoi Bunda to Limbambulu (5.4km) in Wuli West—fall under Lot 1 and will be supervised by the Pthe Ace and Ceeteq Joint Venture (JV).
Speaking at a meeting in Chamoi Bunda shortly after laying the foundation stones, President Barrow said the GIRAV Roads Project is designed to address the major challenges farmers face in transporting produce to markets efficiently and competitively.
He emphasised that agriculture remains the backbone of the country’s economy and the primary source of livelihood for the majority of the population.
“By facilitating the timely and cost-effective movement of agricultural produce—particularly horticulture, rice, and cashew—these feeder roads will significantly reduce post-harvest losses, improve supply chain efficiency, and enhance market access. This will not only increase farmers’ incomes but also strengthen the competitiveness of our agricultural value chains at both national and regional levels. In essence, these roads are economic corridors that will connect production to prosperity,” he stated.
Also speaking, Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, Managing Director of the National Roads Authority (NRA), said the initiative goes beyond road construction.
“This is not just about building roads—it is about creating connections, expanding opportunities, and securing a stronger future for our nation. Every road we build is a pathway to development, prosperity, and national pride,” he said.
He added that the broader 204.7km road network under the project will be constructed to standard specifications, featuring a single bituminous surface treatment, a 7-metre carriageway, drainage systems, culverts, and appropriate road furniture.
