NRA MD Says Road Infrastructure Key to National Development as Barrow Launches 85km URR Project
The Managing Director of the National Roads Authority (NRA), Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, has described road infrastructure as a fundamental pillar for national development, saying improved road networks create opportunities and drive socio-economic growth.
Mr. Janneh made the remarks during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for an 85.3-kilometre road project across the Jimara, Tumana and Kantora districts in the Upper River Region (URR), presided over by Adama Barrow.
The ceremony forms part of the government’s nationwide road construction programme aimed at improving rural connectivity and increasing access to essential services and economic opportunities for communities.
The roads, fully funded by the government, fall under Lots 5 and 6 of the Connect Gambia Infrastructure Projects initiative.
The 85.3-kilometre network comprises four road sections: Mankamang Kunda–Julangel–Sare Musa–Sare Wollom–Banatenda (11.2km) under Lot 5; Girouba–Sabusireh–Touba Tafsir–Dasilame–Alumhari Abdou–Banico Keh Koro–Kumbita–Samba Tako–Kabakama (23.2km) under Lot 6; Suduwol–Missiraba Mariama–Nyamanari (24km) under Lot 6; and Tinkinjo–Sanunbing–Dingirin–Madina Samako–Diabugu Ba Sillah (26.9km), also under Lot 6.
“For communities whose livelihoods depend on farming, trade, education and health services, access determines opportunity,” Mr. Janneh stated.
He noted that the roads go beyond physical construction, describing them as catalysts for productivity, social inclusion and economic resilience.
Speaking on the technical scope of the projects, the NRA boss explained that all roads under the programme would be built to all-weather standards.
“The works commenced with accurate surveying and setting-out to ensure proper alignment, level and gradient. Thereafter, earthworks will shape a stable road formation with the appropriate camber to safely drain surface water away from the carriageway,” he explained.
The project is expected to significantly improve transportation, stimulate economic activity and enhance the livelihoods of beneficiary communities throughout the region.
Representatives of beneficiary communities expressed appreciation to President Barrow for the initiative and pledged their continued support to his administration.
